Forest Defenders Conference

Thailand, Cambodia 2018

Building success with strategies and support for defenders of the earth

Building on the 2017 N1M Forest Defenders Conference in Oxford, UK, we are excited to carry forward the initiative with an extended programme for 2018, at the express desire of the frontline defenders who attended the Oxford conference. One of the key recommendations coming out of the 2017 conference was to address the disconnect between frontline at-risk activists and sources of support. The conference itself is an important means to address this need – as an opportunity for activists to connect with funders, NGOs, inter-governmental agencies and other supporters, and particularly with each other.

A unique and invaluable experience. Gratitude to all, I go back to Brazil with the certainty that this group is too strong and no death system will stop us.

Outline

Forest Defenders Conference, Thailand & Cambodia 2018, will be much more than a standard international meeting. The focus is on supporting front line environmental defenders, with experience-sharing workshops led by environmental campaign groups, strategic planning and security trainings tailored to meet the needs of frontline activists, field trips and psychological support. The programme will comprise of two parts:

  1. Earth in Action – activists, community members and campaigners join together to share experience and build solidarity and cooperation among regional environmentalists’ campaigns, and to join workshops on digital and physical security and environmental investigations. This will comprise three days of workshops and strategic planning for 40 participants.
  2. International Conference – sharing expertise from a range of fields, inter-governmental organisations, environmental NGOs, activists, human rights groups, media and researchers will identify key causes of concern in South East Asia, discuss ideas to meet defenders’ security needs, and develop a one-year action plan. There will be a key note presentation followed by talks given by frontline defenders sharing their work and the risks dangers and challenges they face.
We are so glad to have been a part of this conference and feel like we have connected with a lot of very beautiful people. Thank you so much for helping us remember we are not alone. Nothing can stop us now. The ball is rolling.

I’m hopeful that this initiative will contribute immensely in drawing the attention of the global community to the need to stamp out the killing of harmless ordinary persons who are advocating for a safer environment for all.
